The iPhone Dev Team has just updated their blog to inform iPhone users who have been anxiously waiting for some news on jailbreaking iPhone OS 3.1 that they are working on PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1.
As we reported yesterday, iPhone OS 3.1 has already brought some bad news for users who want to jailbreak and unlock their iPhone.
There is finally some good news for them as Dev Team seem to have just updated the blog post (or I just noticed it) in which they had warned users to avoid upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1 with this note:
We’re currently working on PwnageTool for 3.1, and will be sure to let you know when it’s available!
iPhone OS 3.1 update consists of two parts: update for iPhone OS and an update for modem firmware (from 04.26.08 in iPhone OS 3.0 to 05.11.07).
PwnageTool will allow users to update only the iPhone OS to 3.1 so that they can enjoy all the new features without updating the modem firmware so that they can use UltraSn0w to unlock their iPhone. PwnageTool will be available only for Mac users.
We’ll let you know as soon as PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1 is available.
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ:
Below is some information via BigBoss on the 3.1 firmware and jailbreaking. If you have an iPhone 2G or 3G, you are able to restore. If you have a 3GS, it is a little different story. Check out the info below. You can check out his original post HERE.
So as of today, Apple has stopped signing 3.0 and 3.0.1 restore files. That means that if you have a 3GS iPhone you cannot restore any firmware other than 3.1. If you are happily jailbroken today and something goes wrong you are pretty much screwed. Here is a summary:
1) If you have an iPhone 3g or 2g, you are fine and should be able to restore.
2) If you have a 3gs, you can only restore 3.1 (and kiss your jailbreak good bye). If you did not get an IBSS/IBEC signature before now and you restore, you may never be able to jailbreak again.
3) If you have an iPhone 3GS and you used Cydia to save your TSS or did purplera1n or similar a while back and saved your IBEC, then you will be able to restore in the near future, but you must wait for someone smart to write a utility that will let you do it. Chances are good that such a utility will come out in a couple days. If you can be patient and wait, do so. No one wrote this utility prior to this because we were not sure if Apple would actually stop signing 3.0 – only that they *could*.
It looks like an exploit has already been found in 3.1 firmware so it sounds like a jailbreak will be possible, but again, hold out for a bit.
“iPhone 3.1GM is still vulnerable ” – chronicdevteam
Whenever Apple releases a new version of iPhone OS or iTunes, one of the most frequently asked questions by users who have jailbroken and/or unlocked their iPhone is whether it is safe to download and install them.
MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev Team has answered this question for us about iPhone OS 3.1 and iTunes 9 that were released by Apple at the special event today.
“3G+3GS unlockers .. you must not update to official 3.1! unlock needs pre-hacked 3.1 with 04.26.08”
He has reconfirmed the warning iPhone Dev Team had given yesterday asking iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users who had jailbroken and/or unlocked their iPhone to avoid upgrading to iPhone OS 3.1.
iPhone OS 3.1 updates the iPhone OS as well as the modem firmware (from 04.26.08 in iPhone OS 3.0 to 05.11.07). So users who have jailbroken their iPhone and want to unlock it will have to wait for the iPhone Dev Team to release an updated version of their PwnageTool, which will allow them to update the OS without updating the modem firmware.
MuscleNerd has confirmed that Dev Team will release PwnageTool for iPhone OS 3.1 :
“PwnageTool lets you make custom-made mix+match IPSWs, so we’ll be updating that for 3.1.”
If you want to only jailbreak your iPhone and don’t care about unlocking; even then you are better off waiting for Dev Team to release PwnageTool as you’ll end up losing your jailbreak if you update to iPhone OS 3.1 now and you could permanently also lose the option of unlocking your iPhone in the future.
He has also clarified that it is safe to upgrade to iTunes 9 even if you have jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone.
“it’s safe to update iTunes if already jb/unlocked. Just don’t update iPhone firmware too!”
So this should answer your questions about iPhone OS 3.1 and iTunes 9, if you have jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone.
